Great Hearts Initiatives | John XXIII Educational Center

Mission

John XXIII serves all students in grades 6-12 regardless of race, religion or economic background.

Mission statement: Empowering youth to become leaders through academic and social support.

John XXIII Educational Center is a tuition free academic and social resource offered to families in Racine we have 3 programs to give students and their families a full-rounded support system.

Academic Afterschool Program: We offer students in grades 6-12 a supervised study hall with mentoring and tutoring. We work with students individually to enhance their understanding of key concepts and their studies. We also have Thursday Theme Nights to teach our middle school students important social skills such as team work, leadership and communication. For the high school students we offer Breakthrough Thursdays and bring in guest speakers from colleges, AmeriCorps, the workforce, etc. to talk to students about possibilities for after graduation, college and work site visits of key Racine businesses, and offer ACT/SAT prep.

The Social Outreach Program: We offer 5-6 week outreach courses to work with students at their school site on various social barriers they may be facing at home, in school or their neighborhoods. The course offered at the school and the students in the course are picked by their school counselor based of the needs of their students. Topics for this course include: bullying, healthy relationships, controlling/understanding emotions, transitioning from middle school to high school, coping with incarcerated parents, the loss of a loved one, etc. ***SUCCESS STORY*** Last semester, a group of girls were in our Glamour Girl talk to discuss bullying, gossiping, self-esteem, etc. and enjoyed the course so much they started an anti-bullying club at school to keep the conversation going!

Parent Program: John XXIII collaborates with several organizations, most recently, UW-Extension, Gateway Technical College and Wisconsin Women's Business Initiative Corporation to offer our parents various workshops throughout the school year. We offered parents workshops on making education a family goal, transitioning your student from middle school to high school, a basic computer course, financial courses on how to stretch out your tax return and credit recovery, and more! We also offer parents an English as a Second Language course twice a week.
