Great Hearts Initiatives | The Humane Society of the United States

The Humane Society of the United States seeks a humane and sustainable world for all animals, including people. We are America's mainstream force against cruelty and neglect, and the nation's most trusted voice extolling the human-animal bond. Our mission statement: Celebrating Animals, Confronting Cruelty.

Together with our affiliates, we provide direct care to more animals than any other animal welfare organization -- more than 171,000 animals in 2015 -- through our rescue teams, sanctuaries and wildlife centers, free veterinary care for low-income pet owners, and other lifesaving programs.

We cannot, however, rescue our way out of systemic cruelties such as factory farming, animal testing in labs, puppy mills, animal fighting and the wildlife trade. That's why The HSUS helps millions of animals each year by driving transformational change -- engaging in strategic, multi-pronged, long-term campaigns to take on the biggest fights, confronting multi-billion dollar industries, and staying the course until reform is realized.

The HSUS has always focused on all animals, not just dogs and cats. We were founded in 1954 to tackle the large-scale abuses of animals that are beyond the reach of local humane groups. Because of the breadth and depth of our programs, our work is best viewed through four core areas of focus: education and awareness, direct care and service, public policy and enforcement, and corporate policy.
